Celebrate Eric Montross’ Legacy of Service
August 22, 2025

Eric Montross stood tall – both literally and figuratively – as a 7-foot center on the 1993 Tar Heel national championship team. More than 30 years later, he remains one of Carolina’s all-time greats. His deep, resonant voice became synonymous with Carolina Basketball, and his generosity reached every corner of campus and the broader community.
Today, we celebrate Eric not only for his presence on the court, but also for the profound and positive impact he made off of it.
Guided by values instilled by his parents and coaches, Eric developed a lifelong commitment to philanthropy. Through his annual basketball camp, he raised millions for UNC Children’s Hospital, improving countless lives. This was just one of the many ways Eric devoted himself to serving others, leaving a legacy of generosity and compassion that touched far beyond Chapel Hill. Help us honor Eric’s memory by continuing his inspiring work!
In collaboration with the Montross family, The Rams Club established the Montross Day of Service in 2024. Now in its second year, this special day honors Eric’s birthday on September 23 by inviting Tar Heels everywhere to give back. Our Rams Club staff will visit local hospitals, schools, and community centers.
