During my time as a student-athlete on the UNC Gymnastics team, I had the privilege of being part of FORevHER Tar Heels—and I was lucky enough to meet Smruti Shah. I medically retired after my sophomore season due to a back injury, but the support I received through this program, and especially from Smruti, stayed with me long after I stepped away from my sport.

I hoped FORevHER Tar Heels would connect me with someone who could support both my personal and professional growth. As a pre-health student and athlete, I was navigating a lot, and I wanted guidance from someone who not only understood the unique challenges of this path but who also believed in the legacy and future of women’s athletics at Carolina.

Smruti was—and still is—that person for me.

She has played a pivotal role in my journey toward a career in healthcare. From letting me shadow her in a clinical setting, to writing a recommendation letter that helped me secure a postgraduate fellowship I’ll begin this summer, Smruti has been by my side through every stage of my college journey. Her support goes far beyond career advice—she makes time for coffee, for real conversations, and for checking in on how I’m doing both mentally and emotionally. Especially after my unexpected departure from gymnastics, her consistent presence has helped me navigate a major life transition with confidence and care.

What I’ve valued most is the authentic friendship we’ve built. Even after my medical retirement, Smruti has gone above and beyond to stay connected and involved in my life. Her continued support has meant the world to me—she’s someone I trust deeply and look up to as both a mentor and a friend. Her investment in my growth, both personally and professionally, is something I don’t take for granted.

FORevHER Tar Heels provides female student-athletes with access to role models who can empower them to grow in every aspect of life. Through this program, I’ve developed not only as a student and athlete, but also as a leader and woman. The mentorship and networking opportunities have been instrumental in preparing me for life beyond graduation, equipping me with the tools, support, and connections I need to succeed. Most importantly, I’ve formed lifelong relationships—like the one I share with Smruti—that have profoundly shaped who I am and who I aspire to be.
